I know just what you mean. In the case of DC Comics, I learned that the company had its genesis in 1934 (about the time my father was born). Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson changed the name National Allied Publication. (Ooo, feel the tingle!) to DC Comics. The initials "DC" came from Detective Comics. They soon introduced the world to Batman and then DC Comics merged with another company and became National Periodicals Publications. (Ooo, feel the tingle!)
